On Tap for 2014

No, this isn’t a New Year’s Resolution- type post.  But for future reference, I want to outline my training plan for the rest of the year so that it’s out there.

But first, I should back up and give some details of where I am currently.  The last few months, I’ve been following the workout plan from the book New Rules of Lifting: Supercharged.  I did the first 3 phases of their Basic Training programs, but then went on vacation to Hawaii.  The workout room in the hotel I stayed was basically non-existent (besides a few treadmills), so I wasn’t able to continue with the program while I was away.  When I came back from my trip, I brought a pretty nasty head cold with me, which I’m only just now getting over.  And then last weekend, I tripped over a crack in the sidewalk and twisted my ankle, which made it an even worse idea to try continuing my routine.

The ankle’s feeling much better, the head cold is mostly gone, and I’ve been back in town for 2 weeks.  So at long last, today I finally start the Basic IV phase of the program.

I plan on doing each of the workouts 4-6 times, depending on how many times a week I can lift.  For September through December, I plan on doing a change of pace and following the Lean and Lovely workout plan.  I know I won’t have too much time in December to do too many workouts, but I’ll plan on repeating Basic IV of Supercharged whenever I can get to the gym.

In terms of cardio, I’m signed up for a swim race on Sunday.  It’s a 5k, and in light of my vacation/ cold/ ankle issues, I haven’t been able to train properly this past month.  I may still go and do a shorter distance, but in the meantime, I’ve been swimming a lot to see if I can stupidly do the 5k despite the lack of training.  I don’t really want to risk injuring myself after just getting over 3 hurdles in July to start training again, so it should be an easy decision to pull out of the race.  Unfortunately I’m fairly stubborn, and it’s tempting to do the race since I’m already signed up for it!

Regardless of whether I go through with the race, for the remainder of the summer, I plan on alternating swimming, running, and yoga on my “off” days from lifting.  I’m on a relay team for the Bourbon Chase in October and haven’t run any appreciable distance in over a year!  I hope to request one of the easier relay legs, so it shouldn’t be too hard to work up to those distances in two months.
